Comunications PEPTO -- How big a bottle are you willing to open in this moment?

Answer: I need the largest dose available!

Thursday the churh staff attended a retreat/workshop on non-violent communication led by Loa Freeman of Sucess Naturally.

While I had been exposed to some of the very basics of non-violent communication while attending the Wilderness Awareness School , I will admit that I went into the workshop with a certain degree of apprehension. Most likely because I knew that my communication patterns have fallen into some not-so-healthy patterns.

But I have to say that for me the workshop was truly transformational. The entire morning I was thinking of interactions that I have had where I fell into defensiveness and closed pathways to clear and peaceful and positive communications.

Now, I am the kind of guy who can't remember 98 percent of anything unless I a) repeat it often and b) have some goofy way to remember what I learned.

So, yesterday I learned that when communicating with people I need some PEPTO!!

Posture --It is so important to non-verbal communication. It tells people whether I am really engaged or not.

Eye contact -- Again, it communicates engagement, validations, recognition. It show that I am focused on the person with whom I am speaking.

Pause -- Get your tongue off the top of my mouth and take a deep breath -- four-second inhale, four-second exhale. Remember to keep my ears/eyes open and my ego out.

Tone of voice -- It's not just what I say but how I say it that counts.

Open-ended questions -- (This was also called Request.) I will ask myself," Am I willing to ____ in this moment?" and I will ask others, "Are you willing to ___ in this moment?" This way we maintain autonomy.

Enjoy the pink stuff, and don't be afraid to remind me (non-violently, of course) to take my pink stuff, too!!!

It's a New Year, so THINK BIG!!!

"Clear lots of ground for your tents! Make your tents large. Spread out! THINK BIG! ... Don't be afraid -- you're not going to be embarrassed. Don't hold back -- you're not going to come up short." -- Isaiah 54:2, 4 (The Message)

I came across these verses in my devotional reading last week, and it pretty much sums up my perspective on 2008. Think Big!!!! Don't hold back !!!

The prophet Isaiah spoke the word of God to a people living in exile, a people who knew pain and frustration. Isaiah looks at these lost and displaced people and reminds them that God calls them to an awesome future. God is doing great things for them, and they will find a bountiful, plentiful, spacious future prepared for them.

For me 2007 was a great year, but it of course had times of pain and struggle. I found my way into youth ministry, which quite honestly can feel a little like being in exile, lost in a foreign land. But I start this year with the words of Isaiah ringing in my ears and my heart. THINK BIG! Don't hold back!

Where ever we find ourselves at the start of the New Year, I believe God is calling each one of us to THINK BIG.

May each of our resolutions, hopes, goals, dreams, and expectations this year be BIG. Why? Because God is thinking BIG. Great things are in store for us when we envision and enact God's future.

My thinking big:
I think there will be 25 -- no 50 -- youth at King's Way Friday Night Middle School gatherings.

My thinking big: I think there will be 20 -- no 40 -- youth at King's Way Sunday Night High School gatherings.

This is just the start. How will you THINK BIG this year?

Ahh ... Family

One of the best parts of the holiday is catching up with what everyone in the family is doing.

My cousin Jake made it on to Jay Leno. He's the first guy in the video Jay Leno is watching.

I laughed so hard I cried when I saw this video! Clearly great ideas run in the family!! Can you feel the family pride?
