Poverty: share the wealthy or spread the justice?

As I was driving to church this morning there was a great piece on NPR about the Pope's upcoming visit to Brazil. Check it out here.

It was so good my spouse called me while she was driving to school (A minor miracle since she rarely if ever carrier her cell phone with her -- I know it's stupid, but my threats to put her back on a land line just don't work since she knows we can't really afford to cancel that two-year contract she signed.)

There is so much good stuff in this piece, so I really hope you will listen to it.

Here is one quote from Leonardo Boff that struck me: "The opposite of poverty is not wealth – it is justice. And the objective of liberation theology is to create a more just society, not necessarily a wealthier one. And the great question is, how do we do this?"

So, what is justice and what is poverty? Do the church's mission projects and mission funding address poverty by seeking to spread wealth or by seeking to spread justice?

Can we spread justice without also spreading wealth?

Or, does justice require us (and by us I mean the wealthy and the super-wealthy in the First World) to learn to live with less?
